Band ini dibentuk pada tahun 2004 dengan frontman Luke Pritchard, bassis Max Rafferty, drummer Paul Garred dan gitaris utama Hugh Harris. Tiga anggota awal The Kooks (Paul, Luke and Hugh) bertemu ketika mereka bersekolah di BRIT School di Croydon kemudian mereka pindah ke sekolah musik BIMM di mana mereka bertemu Max tahun 2002. Sedangkan inspirasi untuk membuat grup musik sendiri dicetuskan oleh Luke.

Mereka merilis empat album studio Inside In / Inside Out (2006), Konk (2008), Junk Of The Heart (2011) dan Listen (2014). Pada tahun 2018 mereka melakukan tur dengan Best Of yang mencakup single baru Be Who You Are dan Broken Vow.
